Green Home Trends: The Easy to the Extremely Hard

It is the “IN” thing nowadays. You hear just about everybody claiming they have a “green home” and exclaiming to the world how much they help the environment. We’re not really here to discuss who’s doing what but were here to list down the easiest and some high-level green home trends you can apply to your house.

1.     Update your bulbs

We all know that incandescent bulbs are already out these days. Change your standard bulbs with CFLs or LEDs. Studies have shown that you not only help the environment, you are also doing your wallet a favor.

2.     Energy-star appliances

Thinking of buying a new appliance? Then check out the ones with the “Energy Star” rating. This is one of the simplest and most practical start in going green. These appliances are not only designed to reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse emissions but also conserve energy usage. Some of these products may even mean tax rebates for your green efforts.

3.     Reuse rain water

No, you don’t need a state of the art water capture and filtration contraption for this one. Just install a rain barrel to catch all the runoff from your roof and gutters and use them in your garden or cleaning the car.

4.     Go geothermal

We are not going to produce electricity here but installing geothermal tech on your house means you will spend less on keeping your house warm during the colder seasons. Geothermal technology refers to tapping on the frost line below the ground that stays on the same temperature range all year round. It is costly but the tax incentives and the long term savings you will get will be more than enough to pay it off in the long run.

5.     Solar panels

As kids, we have always been fascinated with solar-powered calculators. Now that we are adults and because technology is moving forwards, we can now have solar-powered homes. Compared to 5-10 years before, using solar power for our homes is relatively cheaper these days. Although still not for everybody price-wise, solar energy for homes is a good way to cut electricity costs and greenhouse emissions.

Green Home Builder Tips: 10 Ways to Go Green and Save Green

Save energy to conserve cash.

· Set your thermostat a couple of degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer season to save on cooling and heating costs.

· Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.

· Unplug appliances when you're not utilizing them. Or, use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use.

· Wash garments in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy utilized to machine-wash clothing goes to warming the water.

· Use a drying out rack or clothesline to conserve the energy otherwise utilized during device drying.

· Save water to conserve money.

· Take much shorter showers to lower water use. This will decrease your water and heating expenses too.

· Install a low-flow showerhead. They do not cost much, and the water and energy savings can rapidly pay back your investment.

· Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These economical home appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.

· Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your yard. Lots of plants require minimal watering. Find out which take place normally in your location.

Less gas = even more cash (and better health!)

· Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while enhancing your cardiovascular health and decreasing your threat of obesity.

· Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more lease, it might conserve you money in the long term.

· Lobby your neighborhood government to enhance spending on walkways and bike lanes. With little expense, these enhancements can pay big dividends in bettering your wellness and decreasing traffic.

Consume Food Wisely.

· If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more pricey when you consider the related environmental and health expenses.

· Buy in your area raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the regional economy. Skip the mineral water.

· Use a water filter to cleanse tap water instead of buying mineral water. Not only is mineral water expensive, but it produces huge amounts of container waste.

· Bring a reusable water bottle, ideally aluminum as opposed to plastic, with you when traveling or at work.

Keep electronic devices from the garbage.

· Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronic devices as long as possible.

· Donate or reuse them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste consists of mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.

· Recycle your cell phone.

· Ask your neighborhood government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.
